As you have probably seen online, there are many entrepreneurial minded people making money online by utilizing the potential of expired domain names. There are a couple of generalities about domains that apply. A name is valuable if it is short, easy to remember..

and targeted to a specific industry or business. In addition to the value created by meeting these, an expired domain can be valuable because the previous owners may have worked (and spent money) promoting their website, but have since decided not to continue the business for whatever reason.  The efforts they imparted in their endeavor can sometimes carry over to the new domain owner.  For example if you are able to locate an expired domain that still contains links in major directories like Yahoo and DEMOS (open directory project) it can be valuable not only in the traffic that is still going to the site, but can save you a bunch of time and possibly money since you don't have to wait months & months to get the benefit of being listed in these directories.

So how do you find names that are expiring?  There are companies that specialize in only domain related functions.  Some of the largest places to buy and sell are listed below.

Like pool.com / sedo.com

So what do you do after you have purchased a good domain name?  Well, you do have a couple of options and that is up to you.  If the sites previous content is related to your existing business in some way you could redirect the visitors of the expired domain to your own and receive the benefit of increased traffic to promote your goods or services.  Or if you are interested in the subject matter, (and see a potential for profit) of what was previously at the domain you could create a website around that subject.  (Hint- You can use the WayBack Machine to see what the website looked like that was previously at a web address.)  You could also turn right around and sell the name by adverting the fact that there are a number of already existing links pointing to it, and advertising the list of the major directories the site it is listed in.  Whatever your course of action there is the potential to make money on the Internet with expired domain names if you are creative and diligent in your efforts.
